While many New Jersey residents drive through Union during their daily commute to and from New York City, those who live in this diverse town of about 58,000 residents love it for a variety of reasons. Union NJ real estate is relatively affordable compared to most nearby townships and many of the houses for sale in Union are exactly what families are looking for. These single-family homes have been constructed in a traditional architectural style (mainly Colonial) and boast substantial square footage with plenty of bedrooms. These multi-level homes are often complemented by large yards, providing even more space for the kids to play. There's also a healthy selection of one-level homes with a cozier feeling. Union homes for sale range in age from the brand new custom houses at the high end of the market to homes from the mid-20th century.
Among Union's other major attributes is its downtown core. This area features plenty of different stores for all your shopping needs, while maintaining a charming historic atmosphere on certain streets that boast old brick and stone buildings. Downtown Union is centered by the Union Train Station that gives commuters access to NYC via the Raritan Valley Line, which only takes 12 minutes to arrive at Newark Penn Station where you transfer to the Northeast Corridor and ride for about 20 minutes before reaching New York Penn Station.
The other public transit option to travel from Union to New York City is to take the 114 bus from Morris Avenue to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in the heart of NYC. This option would probably take between 75 and 90 minutes, but you won't have to transfer to any other buses along the way.
If you prefer to drive to New York, Union is among the most accessible areas in all of New Jersey, with three main thoroughfares passing through the town—Garden State Parkway, Route 22, and I-78 Express. While the amount of time it will take you to get to the city will range considerably depending on traffic, you can often arrive in 40-45 minutes. Even during rush hour traffic on weekday mornings, many commuters can reach Manhattan in a little over an hour.
